Objectifs

- Learning about empires in the 19th and 20th centuries and how they differ from early modern empires; reflecting on the legacy of those empires in contemporary societies.
-Learning about some of the historiographical debates and key historical concepts in the field of imperial history
- Learning about the debates, conflicts, dilemmas within and without empires
- Discussing and analysing a variety of sources

Contenu

This course deals with the history of modern empires in the context of the British empire and the United States of America from the late 18th to the 20th century through a variety of topics. It will highlight imperial connections and circulations, thus showing that empires were constitutive parts of the process of globalisation from the 18th century onwards.
