Women Filmmakers and New Feminist Cinemas in France, Great Britain, and the USA in the 21st Century

This conference is the second in a series of three international conferences organised as part of the ANR-funded project Female Filmmakers and Feminism in the Media (FEMME). The FEMME project examines how the growing presence of women filmmakers and showrunners is reshaping gender culture, both on screen and within the film and television industries. By combining close analysis of films and series with attention to their reception on social media, at festivals, and on streaming platforms, the project explores changing forms of feminism in the wake of #MeToo. It also considers the socio-cultural and economic contexts of women’s audiovisual production from a comparative and transnational perspective.

The first conference, Women Filmmakers: Genre and Gender in French, British and US Cinema and TV Series, was held at Le Mans University on 25–26 June 2025. The third and final conference in the series, Transatlantic Feminist Film History, will take place in Montpellier in 2027.
Building on the conversations initiated in Le Mans, the aim of this second conference is to bring scholarly inquiry into dialogue with filmmaking and professional practice through three days of scholarly and artistic events. Alongside conventional panels and keynote lectures, the programme includes a number of events designed to open up exchanges between research and creative practice, including the Temps Courts evening at ENSAV and a round table with French women filmmakers on the place of women in the film industry.
