Opera in its contexts : at the crossroads of the arts (Xavier Cervantes)

This class offers an interdisciplinary approach to opera as a composite art which cannot be reduced to its musical dimension only, but also includes literature, performance, the visual arts (and sometimes dancing to). It is no coincidence if opera as a fusion of various preexisting forms of artistic expression was born around 1600, at the dawn of what is known in art history as the baroque era, for the ultimate dream of baroque aesthetics was to achieve such a fusion. Historically speaking, the corpus of examples that will be studied comes essentially from the 36 operas created by composer George Frideric Handel in London between 1711 and 1741.

Contemporary theatre and performance: new acting perspectives for the stage (Sophie Maruéjouls)
This class offers to approach contemporary plays through the perspective of acting in order to redefine the well-established notions of character, person/a, actor and role. Throughout the 20th century until now, the way playwrights and theatre practitioners have imagined characters has had deep implications on acting methods and theories, raising questions about the fragmentation of human identity and its potential expansions into the animal, the mechanical and/or the digital worlds. Students will be invited to engage in discussions about the way theatre characters are embodied on today’s stage and compare the extracts studied in class with their own experience as theatre goers.
