Humanity's Future in Space: Approaching Space Sustainability

By Bernd M Weiss, PhD Student, Product Innovation and Space Systems
Luleå University of Technology

Star Trek and the adventures of the Enterprise are widely known, but while the show, of course, plays in a fictitious and distant future, humanity pushing the final frontier farther into the solar system already has started. What are current known challenges we are facing in space and how can we overcome them? What does sustainability mean in space and how is “space sustainability” achievable? This lecture provides some of the answers.
You hear about how sustainability in space compares to sustainability on Earth and you learn about different motivators for sustainability in space. We talk about the challenges the space industry needs to overcome in order to achieve long-term space sustainability. In addition, critical reflections on designing spacecraft, regulatory actions, and the need for new business models are be presented.
